If you are new to Zen practice or have attended a few practice sessions, you may want to consider attending one of our retreats.
Retreats are a wonderful way to begin to deepen your practice. We have several different retreats to choose from.
One day retreats: We occasionally offer one day retreats throughout the year. They consist of the basic practices of sitting, walking, and bowing meditation, and like other retreats, include a vegetarian meal. The schedule for the one day retreats does vary, but generally they are held 8:30am – 4:30pm.
Yong Maeng Jong Jins (YMJJ): “To leap like a tiger while sitting.” Yong Maeng Jong Jin retreats can be different lengths, with the Zen Center of Las Vegas usually offering 3 day retreats. Retreats consist of traditional Zen practice, along with work practice and rest periods. Temple style meal service is included. The retreat also includes talks, kong-an interviews with the guiding teacher. We do ask that you have some practice experience before attending this retreat.
Kido chanting: Usually held on special occasions, Kido chanting is one day, usually 9:00am – 3:00pm. We chant “Kwan Seum Bosal” (Korean name for the bodhisattva of compassion). Everyone is welcome.
We are continually adding lectures & workshops to our schedule.
From lectures on the Diamond Sutra, to inviting world renowned masters in their fields, our lectures are extremely popular. To stay informed, please check our Current Events page frequently. Current Events
Zen practice is for everyone, young and old.
“We are a friendly group of people of diverse ages and backgrounds who come together to practice Zen as taught by Zen Master Seung Sahn, the 78th Patriarch in the Korean Chogye order, and the first Korean Zen Master to live and teach in the West. Zen practice is important. It can help us understand and see our situation and life direction. We create suffering in this world by thoughts of, “Here I am, this is where I want to be.” We’re always projecting outward. We’re clouded by “I, my, me.” By getting rid of judgmental thought, we get back to the essence of who we are, which is compassion. Most people want to be a better person. Our Zen tradition utilizes 3 main methods of practice - chanting, sitting, & bowing meditation. We go over the basics of these core practices during our beginner’s nights, which are held the first Monday of the month at 6:00pm. There are a lot of self-help books, but Zen meditation is just like taking an onion and peeling away myriad transparent layers and relinquishing our desire mind. It is the unfolding and understanding of self. Please come practice with us.” Ji Haeng Zen Master & Guiding Teacher – Zen Center of Las Vegas
